501Edinburgh Castle is a major paid heritage attraction on Castle Rock, best for families who want the Crown Jewels, big city views, museums and a proper Edinburgh landmark day.
It needs advance booking, comfortable shoes and realistic expectations about steep cobbles, steps and crowds.
A major royal castle with hands-on Palace Vaults, a family trail, grand rooms and views. Allow 2–3 hours for a mixed-weather family visit.
Edinburgh Zoo is a large outdoor animal day on Corstorphine Hill, with more than 80 acres of wooded hillside, daily talks, three play areas, picnic space and child-height animal viewing.
Give it several hours and expect hills, changeable weather and animals that may not always be easy to spot.
