The red-sandstone walls feel properly imposing, and the castle is close enough to Glasgow for a short trip.
Current admission
Adults £4.50 and ages 7 to 15 £2.50; under-sevens are free. These reduced prices reflect the limited access.
Access limits
Grass slopes and uneven stairs mean a buggy or wheelchair will only cover part of the visit.
What children can explore
The courtyard, surviving walls and views still show the castle's scale. There is room to wander and imagine how the different parts fitted together, although the closures leave less indoor climbing and exploring.
Access is the deciding factor
The castle is about 160 metres from the level tarmac car park, which has accessible bays; contact the castle in advance if you need to arrange drop-off at the entrance. The shop is step-free, but uneven spiral stairs, straight timber steps and grass slopes limit how much of the monument you can explore with a wheelchair or buggy. The nearest adapted toilet is at Tesco on Bothwell Road, not at the castle.
Make it a short heritage stop
Check the opening day and lunchtime closure before you leave. A picnic can stretch the visit in good weather, but the castle itself is unlikely to fill a long family day while access remains reduced.
