Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve

A boardwalk takes you out over the bog at Flanders Moss, with a viewing tower for a look across the moss and towards the hills. The short loop makes this an easy stop to fit into a day around Stirling or the Trossachs. Bring a snack and make a toilet stop before you arrive.

Our family take

This suits children who enjoy a short walk and looking for wildlife, without needing a long hike. Summer brings the chance of lizards on the boardwalk and dragonflies over the bog; colder months are better for geese and birds of prey. For a child who needs space to run freely, choose a park instead: everyone needs to stay on the paths here.

  • Stay on the path. The bog has deep pools and ground that may look firmer than it is. Keep young children close.
  • Toilet stop. There are no toilets at the reserve. Thornhill’s public toilets have no disabled access or baby changing.

The practical details

Plan your visit

Start point
Use the reserve car park off the B822. From Thornhill, head south for 3km, then turn right onto the minor road for the final 1km. FK8 3QJ is the nearest postcode; follow the reserve signs.
Cost and access
Reserve access is free, with no ticket needed for the walk. No daytime parking tariff is listed; check the car park signs. Visit in daylight and follow any temporary access notices.
Toilets and changing
The nearest public toilets are on Orchard Mill Road, The Loan, Thornhill, FK8 3QB. The council lists them as free and open 24 hours, with no disabled access or baby changing. Arrange another stop if either is essential.Check Thornhill toilet details
Food and breaks
Bring drinks and a picnic. There are picnic benches in the meadow by the car park and three resting benches around the path.
Getting here without a car
The nearest bus stop is in Thornhill, about 4km from the reserve. That adds a substantial approach to a short walk, so plan transport to the entrance separately.

A little more detail

Make it work for your family

How long is the walk?

The circular route is about 900m, using gravel path and boardwalk. NatureScot suggests around 30 minutes for the walk; allow longer for little legs, wildlife watching and the viewing tower. A picnic can extend the stop without adding more walking.

The tower is an optional climb. You can enjoy the bog from the ground-level route if climbing does not suit everyone. You may not see wildlife on every visit.

Buggies, wheelchairs and wet weather

The route has a firm, mostly smooth gravel surface and plastic boardwalk. It is flat apart from one short gentle slope, making the ground-level circuit worth considering with a buggy. The viewing tower is separate from that accessible route; do not plan on taking a buggy or wheelchair up it.

Wet boardwalk can be slippery. Choose a dry, calm spell if you can, and take care after rain or frost. This is an outdoor visit throughout, with no indoor attraction to rescue a wet afternoon. If you need exact widths or help with a particular wheelchair, contact the reserve manager before travelling.

The rest of your day

Thornhill is the practical stop for the public toilets before or after your walk. If you are staying at Forest Hills in Kinlochard, plan Flanders Moss as a separate drive through the Trossachs; it is not a walk from the hotel.

For a longer woodland outing near Aberfoyle, compare the Loch Ard and Lochan Spling sculpture walks. Their shortest full loop is 4.2km and has slopes, so it asks considerably more of young walkers than Flanders Moss.
