Go Ape Glentress Forest

Glentress is a high-ropes outing for older children and teens, with crossings, Tarzan swings and a long zip across the valley. The course needs age 10+ and at least 1.4m height. Its steep hillside makes the plan harder for anyone hoping to follow with a buggy or wheelchair.

Our family take

Choose Glentress when climbing and heights are the main reason for the day out. The course gives older children a shared challenge, and the forest setting adds to it. It works less well for a mixed-age family if younger siblings need to stay close to the climbers or someone needs an accessible route alongside them.

  • Adults climb too. One participating adult aged 18+ must supervise up to two children aged 10–15. Include adult tickets and parking in your total.
  • Steep ground. The course is on a steep hill and is not wheelchair-accessible. A pushchair can reach some areas, but steep uneven ground makes following the course difficult.

Cost

Parking and arrival
Paid parking at Falla Brae, beside the Go Ape cabin up the hill from the main Glentress car park. Follow Go Ape signs after entering the forest from the A72; check your route rather than stopping at the first car park.
Access
The steep course is not wheelchair-accessible, and pushchairs can only reach some areas with difficulty. Accessible trails elsewhere in Glentress do not provide an accessible route along the high ropes.
Food and facilities
Toilets are beside the cabin; accessible toilets and baby changing are at the main hub. Peel Café is about a 15-minute walk downhill from Go Ape, so allow for the walk back uphill if you eat before your session.

A little more detail

Make it work for your family

A climb as well as a zip-wire day

The Challenge course includes tree-to-tree crossings, Tarzan swings and valley zips. A child who loves the idea of a zip wire still needs to be comfortable climbing and moving between obstacles high above the ground.

The course takes 2–3 hours and uses a self-belay system, with a safety briefing before you start. One adult climbs with every two children aged 10–15. If confidence, attention or additional support might affect the session, talk it through with the site before paying.

Plan separately for younger siblings

The steep uneven hillside makes this an awkward place to follow climbers with a buggy. The course is not wheelchair-accessible, even though there are accessible routes elsewhere in the forest. A family member staying on the ground may need a separate plan at the main hub.

Glentress has walking and cycling routes, but those are separate activities with their own effort and equipment needs. Do not assume everyone can stay together beside the high ropes. If you would rather have a younger-child course and easier spectator areas, compare Go Ape Dalkeith for another day.

Find the cabin before planning lunch

Use Falla Brae parking for Go Ape, up the hill from the main forest car park. The toilets next to the cabin are useful before checking in, while baby changing and accessible toilets are at the main hub.

Peel Café is about 15 minutes downhill on foot. Eating there after the course avoids rushing back up for your start time. If you arrive by bus, check the current Glentress stop and the walk into the forest, including the climb to the cabin.

Weather and what to carry

Rain does not usually stop the course, but ice, thunderstorms or gales can. Wear sturdy closed shoes and clothes you can get muddy, keep your middle covered for the harness and tie back long hair. Take dry clothes for the journey home.

Bring as little as possible. Bags and bumbags cannot go on the course, and small-item storage at the cabin is not secure. A full Challenge session and lunch can fill the main part of the day; leave any extra forest activity flexible.
