Kilmacolm Farm Tours
Get close to Highland cows and calves on a guided trailer safari at Muirhouse Farm near Kilmacolm. It suits children who enjoy animals, tractors and countryside views, with little walking involved. This is not suitable for toddlers, under-5s or babies in carriers.

Our family take
Choose it for a couple of hours of farm animals and questions with a farmer. The covered trailer lets you see the fields without a long walk, but children need to be happy staying seated with a seat belt on throughout the tour.
- Before booking. Under-16s must be accompanied by a paying adult. Wheelchair users need to transfer into a seat; the trailer has no wheelchair anchor points.

- Book at least 48 hours ahead and check the live calendar for seasonal dates and times. For groups or VIP tours, enquire directly. Late telephone bookings may be possible if a running tour has space.
- Trailer tour prices
- Listed prices: adult £25.20; child aged 5–15 £19; concession £19; family (2 adults + 2 children) £75.60. Check the total for your chosen date before paying.
- Visit length
- Allow two hours for the Highland Cow Trailer Tour. The separate lambing experience lasts 1½ hours.
- Access
- Passengers must transfer into a seat. The trailer has a 33cm step and no wheelchair anchor points. Discuss your needs with the farm before booking.
- Parking and arrival
- Free parking on fairly level hardstanding, with accessible parking on site. The approach includes a 1-mile single-track tarmac road with passing places.
- Food and toilets
- There is a reception toilet and handwashing. No café; complimentary hot or cold drinks follow the experience, and a vending machine sells home baking and gifts for cash or card.

What children will do
Trailer safari or lambing visit?
The Highland Cow Trailer Tour takes up to 14 visitors through the fields, with close views of cattle, sheep and calves, farm machinery and the remains of an old grouse shooting railway. There are opportunities for questions and photos; wildlife sightings will vary. The trailer safari does not include animal feeding.
The separate seasonal Lambing Experience takes place mainly in a shed and includes feeding lambs, meeting working sheepdogs and learning about lambing. It is for ages 5+ and is not suitable for pregnant visitors. Check its own dates, prices and booking conditions.
With younger schoolchildren
Think about whether your child can stay seated for the trailer tour. Use the reception toilet before boarding, and ask the farm about toilet breaks if your child may need one during the visit.
Groups and VIP tours
For a birthday, a larger family group or a particular date, send the farm your preferred time and numbers before making plans. VIP cab tours are listed at £150 for up to two people; check the arrangements directly.
Weather and clothing
The all-weather trailer offers shelter, so rain need not rule out the visit. Bring waterproofs, extra layers and sturdy footwear for the uneven ground around this exposed hill farm.
Wet weather alone is not grounds for a ticket refund. Exceptional adverse weather can still cause cancellation, so check the farm’s conditions before booking.
Food and farm hygiene
Treat the drinks and home baking as a snack stop, and plan lunch elsewhere if you need a meal. Eating and drinking are not allowed during the farm tour. Use the handwashing facilities after contact with animals and before eating.
Access and getting there
There is little walking and the parking and reception surfaces are fairly level. That does not remove the need to transfer into the trailer or buggy seat. Read the accessibility statement and contact the farm about the step and seating before booking.
A private VIP tour may suit visitors who find groups or noise difficult, including some autistic visitors and those with a one-to-one carer. Discuss what your family needs; the standard group tour will not suit everyone.
- Public transport
- There is no direct public transport route to the farm. You can take a train to Johnstone or Greenock Central and arrange a taxi for the final leg.
- Dogs
- Dogs are not permitted on the working farm. Assistance dog users should contact the farm in advance to discuss access.
When to choose something else
Choose Finlaystone Country Estate nearby if your children need play areas, trails and space to move, or if anyone in your family is under five. Kilmacolm suits children who would rather spend the visit seeing Highland cows and hearing about farm life.
