Kilmacolm Farm Tours

This is a guided trailer safari rather than a walk-around animal attraction. Families arrive at the farm, use the reception facilities, board the trailer and head out for a structured farm tour with photo stops, questions and countryside views.

It works best for a child who likes animals, tractors, farms or Highland cows and can stay seated with a seat belt for the tour. If your child mainly wants play equipment, animal feeding or space for younger children to run around, choose a different animal day.

The age rule is firm: experiences are for ages 5+ and are not suitable for toddlers, under-5s or babies in carriers. That makes Kilmacolm different from an animal day with more freedom to move, even though the animal appeal is strong.

For families with a child around the lower age limit, the practical question is whether they can sit safely, listen, ask questions and manage the time away from toilets while the trailer is away from reception.

Standard Highland Cow Trailer Tours are pre-booked online and currently need 48 hours' booking notice. The listed season runs from May to late September on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with morning and afternoon sessions.

Tours run in all weather. The trailer has perspex sides that can be rolled up or down, so the visit is less exposed to bad weather than a fully open farm walk.

It is still a working hill farm, so dress for the forecast. Waterproofs, layers and sturdy footwear are sensible, especially for lambing season or damp days.

Use the reception toilet before the tour starts. There is a toilet and baby changing at reception, but there are no toilet facilities while out on safari for about 1.5 hours.

Complimentary drinks are included with experiences. Home baking and merchandise are usually available from a contactless vending machine, so treat food as a small extra rather than a meal stop.

This can work well for some nervous children and ASN visitors because the group size is small and the visit is structured. The important caveat is that needs vary, and a VIP tour may be a better fit for anyone who would find a group trailer tour difficult.
