The play park can be the whole visit, or you can add woodland paths and castle ruins for a longer walk without moving the car.

Make it work for your family
Play first, then choose a walk
Start at the courtyard and play park, then use the free map to choose one landmark or short trail. Return to the courtyard for toilets or food before deciding whether to go farther.
The enclosed play park beside the courtyard opened in June 2026. Children can climb the owl structure, use its slide and rope climb, or try the swings and zipline. A minibeast sensory panel gives younger children something to try too.
For a longer walk, choose Mugdock Castle overlooking the loch, passing Craigend Castle on the way. The Toadstool Trail through Pheasants Wood is another option to find on the map. Choose one destination rather than trying to cover the whole 270-hectare park.

Who will enjoy it
Younger children may be happiest with the play park and a short woodland loop. Primary-age children can add castle ruins or a longer route. For older children, make a castle or trail the goal rather than expecting the play park to carry the visit.
Allow two hours for play and a short walk, or a half day if everyone wants to go farther. These are planning estimates: your route and the time spent playing will decide the length of the visit.
Prams, wheelchairs and wet weather
A route that works around the courtyard may not continue across the wider park. If mud, gradients or wheelchair access could decide the visit, ask staff for the best current path before setting off.
The wider park has woodland and moorland paths, so keep a shorter visit in mind when the ground is wet or children tire. Wear footwear with good grip. If you need a guaranteed smooth, step-free walk, confirm a particular route before travelling.
The visitor-centre access guide covers parking, entrances and toilets in detail. Baby changing is listed in the accessible toilet opposite the visitor centre, but its ramped approach has no level landing at the top or handrails.
Getting there and taking a break
Use the main car park on Craigallian Road for the courtyard, play park, toilets and cafés. It opens from 9am to 6pm; an all-day opening for the grounds does not mean you can leave a car here beyond those hours.
The nearest railway station is Milngavie. You can walk in on the West Highland Way and follow signs to the park, but that adds a walk before the play park. Check onward travel before choosing a car-free visit with young children.
Keep the courtyard as your base for food and toilets, and take drinks and snacks on a longer walk. Cafés and the visitor centre have their own hours, so check those if a food or toilet stop is essential.

Before your Mugdock visit
Choose Mugdock for a flexible outdoor day with play and a walk. It is less useful when you need a full indoor outing or a route you can rely on without checking surfaces and gradients.
Check current park notices and main car-park hours before setting off. Use the council’s events listings for any separately organised activity; the free park visit does not depend on booking an event.
