RSPB Lochwinnoch
RSPB Lochwinnoch works well as a short wildlife outing with young children. Two 400m trails and a 1.5km all-access trail lead to hides and viewpoints. The visitor centre and play area give children a break from quiet watching. Sightings vary, and any of the trails can flood after heavy rain.

Our family take
A good choice when you want a gentle wildlife walk that you can keep short. Start with a 400m trail, leave time for the play area, and stay longer if the children enjoy watching from the hides.
- Best for. Children who enjoy birds, ponds, hides and short nature trails, including families using a buggy.
- Choose another day out. If your children want guaranteed animal sightings or a mostly indoor visit, this is unlikely to suit.

- Entry and activities
- Reserve entry is free and there is no need to book in advance. Self-led activities cost extra.
- Parking
- Non-member parking is £4.50 for up to six hours. RSPB members and Blue Badge holders park free; members must display their membership card. There is free parking under 30 minutes for a quick shop visit. Pay by contactless card at the machine.
- Address and train
- Largs Road, Lochwinnoch PA12 4JF. Lochwinnoch station is 400 metres south-east of the visitor centre.
- Trail choice
- Two 400m trails and one 1.5km all-access trail. All are flat with no significant inclines, but all can flood after heavy rain.
- Toilets and baby changing
- Toilets are beside the visitor centre; baby changing is in the accessible toilet.
- Food and opening times
- Refreshments are available from the shop, and there are picnic benches. Bring food if you need a full meal. Check visitor-centre, shop and toilet hours before travelling, especially for an early or late visit.

What children can do
Children can follow a short trail, look from a hide and see what changes between viewpoints. The play area gives younger visitors a chance to move when they have had enough of quiet watching.
Prams, access and flooding
The flat trails make this a practical option for buggies and wheelchairs, and the main route is described as all-access. After heavy rain, any of the trails can flood, so check conditions before relying on them.
The gravel car park can be uneven and develop potholes. If you need a particular accessible route or facilities, check the detailed access information and current conditions before setting off.
Before you go
Take binoculars if you have them and bring a snack, but treat any sightings as a bonus. Binocular hire is available if you want to try it; check the current cost and return time when you arrive.
For a longer outing, leave time for Lochwinnoch village rather than trying to make the reserve fill a whole day.
