Scottish Seabird Centre
Scottish Seabird Centre works best as a timed, indoor Discovery stop in North Berwick, not a full day built around a boat trip. Children get live island cameras, VR and interactive exhibits; boat trips are booked separately and run seasonally.

Our family take
The centre works well as a rainy-day or mixed-weather anchor because families get a real wildlife experience indoors, with no boat timetable to work around. Pair it with the harbour or beach if your toddler needs more movement.
- Worth knowing. Children who mainly want free play, families looking for a full indoor day, or anyone who would struggle with a busy, screen-led visit. The centre says it can be noisy during school holidays and can advise on quieter times.
- Boat trips. Boat trips are separate, seasonal bookings with their own height, fitness and mobility rules.

- Daily: 10am-4pm in January and November-December, 10am-5pm in February, March, September and October, and 10am-6pm from April to August. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day; festive hours vary.

- Discovery: adult £13.50, child (3-15) £9 and under-3s free. Concession £11.25 and family (2 adults and 2 children) £38.50; members and registered carers are free. Additional children on the family ticket are £8.50.

- Book online up to the day before, or ask at the information desk on arrival if capacity allows. Advance booking is recommended for weekends and school holidays.

- The centre car park is at EH39 4HN, about a five-minute walk away. It is free from 1 October to the end of February; summer demand means allowing extra time. Recreation Park is free around a 15-minute walk away. Parking is charged 9am–6pm outside the free season.

What children will enjoy
The Discovery Experience gives children things to do beyond the display panels. They can control live cameras looking towards the Firth of Forth islands, try VR, watch wildlife films and games, and join daily talks or guided spotting sessions.
Preschoolers and primary-age children who enjoy animals, screens and short structured activities are the clearest fit. Under-3s can come free, but many families will use the centre as one part of a North Berwick day.
Parking and getting there

- North Berwick station is about a 15-minute walk, downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. Same-day train, bus, walking or cycling arrivals may qualify for 25% off Discovery.
Level access and a lift serve the building. Boat access is different; ask ahead for specific support.
Prams, accessibility and sensory support
- Family facilities and access
- The building has level access, a lift between two floors, a harbour ramp and a ground-floor accessible toilet with baby changing. Arrange a wheelchair loan in advance. The café has highchairs and staff can help with bottle warming.
- Sensory and communication support
- Ask in advance for BSL support or advice on quieter times. Sensory bags are free to borrow with a £20 refundable deposit; ear defenders alone need a £5 refundable deposit. The centre currently says its hearing loop needs replacement. Assistance dogs are welcome and staff recognise sunflower lanyards.
- Boat access
- The centre says its boat trips are not suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility. Check the exact sailing separately from access to the building.

Choose Discovery for an indoor visit of about 1 hour 15 minutes, with live cameras, games, films and VR. It runs daily, and you can visit without committing to a sailing.
Choose a boat trip if getting out among the island wildlife is the point of the day. Trips are booked separately, run seasonally and vary by vessel, duration and access rules, so check the exact sailing before booking.
