Opening times
9:30 AM - 5:30 PM (1 Apr-30 Sep, last entry 4:30 PM), 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM (1 Oct-31 Mar, last entry 3:00 PM). Closed 25-26 Dec and 1-2 Jan.
Skara Brae is one of the easier prehistoric stops for families because the visitor centre does some of the explaining before you walk down to the village itself. It still needs a bit of planning at busy times, though, because ticketing, last entry, and the summer-versus-winter offer all change through the year.
Best for Families who want a manageable Orkney heritage stop, especially if they like a mix of indoor interpretation and a shorter outdoor walk

It pairs a strong visitor centre with one of Scotland's most important prehistoric sites, so the visit has more shape than an exposed ruins-only stop.
Choose this first
Start with Skara Brae if you want the easier Orkney prehistoric stop, with a visitor centre, a shorter outdoor walk, and more flexibility if the day shifts.
Pair with Maeshowe
Add Maeshowe when you are happy to book a timed guided slot. It works better as the more specialist second stop than the flexible anchor.
