Why visit
Choose Smoo Cave for a dramatic short stop that feels genuinely different from the beaches and viewpoints around Durness. Older children can add the guided tour when it is operating and the physical route suits them.
Buggies and prams
Do not plan Smoo Cave as a buggy route. If visiting with a young child, a carrier is more realistic for the free section, but only continue if the surfaces and conditions feel safe.
The free cave visit
The free version takes families along the public walkway to the waterfall chamber. It gives children the scale, sound and waterfall atmosphere without committing to ladders or a boat.
This is the better plan for preschoolers, short attention spans and days when the tour is not running.
The guided tour
The tour continues from the main chamber across the wooden walkway, down ladders into a river raft and on to a natural stream passage using stepping stones. It lasts about 30 minutes.
Treat it as a small physical adventure, not a gentle boat ride. Children need to cope with headgear, ladders, wet uneven ground and getting in and out of the raft.
Ages, access and prams
Under-3s cannot join the guided tour. For preschoolers above that age, decide honestly whether ladders, a cave raft and uneven ground will feel exciting or overwhelming.
A pram is not a realistic cave plan. Use the free section selectively, bring a carrier if needed and turn back if surfaces or water make the route uncomfortable.
Weather, booking and cash
Tours cannot be booked ahead because they depend on water levels. Call the weather message line on the day; it is updated each morning.
Bring cash if you hope to tour. An apparently dry day at the cave does not guarantee operation because rain and wind elsewhere can feed extra water into the cave.
Final checks before you go
Wear grippy footwear, bring waterproof layers and decide in advance whether the free chamber alone will still make the stop worthwhile.
Use Durness for food and wider facilities. Smoo works as a memorable route stop, but it should not be the only plan for a day of poor weather.
