Uath Lochans

Uath Lochans is a quiet forest outing near Kincraig with two quite different walks from the same car park. The 2.4km lochan trail has water views and boardwalk; Farleitter Crag is a steeper 4km climb. Pick the route your children can manage, and make a toilet stop before you arrive.

Our family take

The shorter trail gives children lochans, boardwalk and wildlife to look for without committing to a big hill walk. The crag route is there for stronger walkers who want the view; it is a separate, more demanding choice.

  • With a buggy. The lochan path is often narrow and includes boardwalk, short steeper sections and mud after rain. A carrier is the safer backup; neither full-route buggy nor wheelchair access is confirmed.
  • Facilities. There is free parking and a picnic area, but no toilets are listed at Uath Lochans. Plan a stop before the forest road.

A little more detail

Make it work for your family

Which trail should you choose?

For a shorter outing, take the waymarked Uath Lochans Trail through woodland and beside the water. FLS grades its 2.4km route Moderate and allows an hour of walking. Frogs and dragonflies are possibilities to look for, not guaranteed sightings.

Farleitter Crag is a different plan: 4km, graded Strenuous, with long steep slopes and a viewpoint over the lochans. The official allowance is 1½ hours before children’s stops. Skip the climb if little legs are already tired.

Official trail grades and surfaces

Buggies and wet ground

The lochan path is mostly firm gravel but can be narrow, with boardwalk and short moderately steep parts. After rain it can be muddy and slippery. An all-terrain buggy may be workable for some families, but full-route buggy and wheelchair access are not confirmed. Bring a carrier if the path may be too much for your wheels.

The crag trail has many long steep slopes, with occasional loose ground. Treat it as a walking route for children who are comfortable climbing rather than a buggy alternative.

Official path descriptions

Parking, toilets and a picnic

Follow the Kincraig and Feshiebridge directions on the FLS visitor page. The car park is on the right before the nearest postcode destination. Parking is currently free, and there is a picnic area.

There is no toilet or café listed at the trailhead. Make a toilet stop beforehand and pack food and water if you want to linger; Kincraig has the nearest places to eat. Baby-changing provision is unconfirmed.

Check before setting off

This is an outdoor stop with little shelter once you are on the trails. Check the current alerts, weather and path conditions, especially after heavy rain. Keep children close beside the lochans and check for ticks after the walk.

If the forecast is poor or you need a guaranteed smooth route and toilets on arrival, choose another outing. Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig is a separate paid wildlife day; Loch an Eilein near Aviemore is another woodland walk, with its own parking terms and route length.
