Our family take

On a day when the play areas are available, you can let the children play, stop for lunch and add a short walk without moving the car. During the works, go for the park itself if your family would enjoy that. If the playground is the main reason to go, wait until it reopens.

  • Playground works. From 12 October 2026, only the space net and toddler play area remain available. From 2 November, the whole playground closes. The rest of the park stays open.
  • October evenings. Park gates close at 5.30pm from 5 October to 1 November 2026. Evening vehicle access is restricted to Pumpkin Forest event attendees.

A little more detail

Make it work for your family

Playground works and reopening

The full playground closes from 2 November 2026. The Council expects the work to take around ten weeks, depending on the weather, and lists refurbishment continuing into January 2027. There is no confirmed reopening day to plan around yet.

The replacement is planned to include climbing towers, tunnels, rope play and slides for older children, plus a redesigned inclusive area for ages one to five. Accessible equipment and sensory features are planned too. These are future additions; wait for reopening information before relying on them for your child.

Buggies, walks and weather

Main paths are suitable for a buggy, but secondary paths can have steep slopes and uneven ground. Keep to a short main-path walk if little legs are tiring, and ask the park team about a suitable route if you need step-free access. Ponds and streams mean young children need close supervision.

The play and walking are outside. Bring waterproofs and shoes for wet ground, and keep the visit short if everyone is cold. A café break can help, but the park is a poor choice if your family needs a whole indoor afternoon. Dogs are welcome in the wider park but cannot enter the adventure or toddler play areas.

Lunch and other activities

Bring a picnic if you want to stop when the children need a break. Tree Top Café in Vogrie House serves food, drinks and a children’s menu, with takeaway available. Its soft play is a separate indoor activity; check the café’s current arrangements if you are counting on that as a rain backup.

The miniature railway and The Bubbling Toad are separate activities with their own dates and arrangements. Check the operator before promising a ride or potion session, especially outside the main season.

Arriving without a car

The park is not on a regular bus route. The Council lists a 1.9-mile walk from Pathhead and 2.8 miles from Gorebridge railway station. That adds a substantial walk before any play, so driving is usually the easier family plan. Check the 800 community bus timetable and route if you want an alternative to walking all the way.
