Amazonia with kids

Amazonia is a temperature-controlled tropical house with more than 60 species. Highlights include monkeys, parrots, snakes, frogs, tarantulas and fish, while the nocturnal area adds bats, kinkajou, snakes and scorpions. Treat that as a flavour of the collection rather than a guarantee of a particular sighting.

For younger children, the appeal is close-up movement and a warm indoor route rather than lots of play equipment. Older children are more likely to enjoy it if they already like wildlife or want to ask about a handling session.

Amazonia suits toddlers, preschoolers and younger children who enjoy looking at animals and can manage a 1.5-2.5 hour visit. The compact route works around naps, snacks and shorter attention spans.

Older primary children and teens can enjoy the visit too, especially if they already like wildlife, the nocturnal area or a handling session. It may disappoint children expecting rides, a large outdoor zoo or lots of hands-on play, so a genuine interest in animals makes the admission more worthwhile.

Amazonia gives you a warm indoor base on a wet day. Keep the visit contained, then decide whether the wider M&D's site, food court or another separately priced activity suits your family's energy and budget.

Do not treat an Amazonia ticket as a pass for the whole theme park. Rides, soft play, bowling and other M&D's activities have their own prices and opening patterns, so choose the extras before you promise them to the children.

Treat handling sessions as an add-on. They last roughly 20-30 minutes, have limited capacity, run at changing times and are bought on the day at Amazonia reception. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Sessions can sell out or be affected by school groups and birthday parties. Ask at reception for the current time, availability and price when you arrive, and keep the visit worthwhile even if no session is running.

Food and drink are not permitted inside the tropical house or animal-handling room. M&D's food court and restaurants are immediately adjacent, so plan a food break there rather than expecting a café inside Amazonia. Toilets are available throughout the wider park and food outlets, with a disabled toilet in the gift shop area.

Assistance dogs cannot enter Amazonia because of the free-ranging animals. Blind and visually impaired visitors can contact the venue about arranging a guide, and registered assistance dogs can be cared for by front-of-house staff.

Amazonia is part of M&D's Scotland's Theme Park in Motherwell, within Strathclyde Country Park. Free parking is available at M&D's, with more than 500 spaces and designated disabled parking at the front entrance.
