Opening times
Main public opening is currently published for 28 March to 9 August 2026, daily 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Balmoral Castle works best for families as a royal estate, gardens and exhibition visit rather than a classic child-friendly castle interior day. With a standard ticket, families can explore the grounds, gardens, mazes, audio guide route and Ballroom Exhibition, but the fuller interior castle tours are separate and listed as 16+.
Best for School-age children, older children and mixed-age family groups who enjoy gardens, royal history, outdoor space and a slower estate-style visit

Balmoral is worth considering when your family wants the royal-estate setting, gardens, mazes and Balmoral atmosphere. It is weaker value if your main aim is a child-focused indoor castle tour or lots of castle rooms.
Best ages
Roughly 5+, especially children who can enjoy walking, looking, mazes and royal-history atmosphere.
Not ideal for
Toddlers needing active play, families wanting hands-on exhibits, or children expecting lots of castle rooms.
Value verdict
Good if you want the Balmoral setting, gardens and estate atmosphere; weaker if you mainly want a child-focused castle interior.
With a standard ticket, children can explore the grounds and gardens, try the Thistle Maze and Celtic maze garden, use the free 10-stop audio guide, and go into the Castle Ballroom to see the current exhibition. Families can also use the restaurant, gift shop and some estate walks.
What children cannot do on an ordinary family ticket is roam through lots of castle rooms. The fuller interior visit is a separate guided tour, limited in numbers, and listed as a 16+ experience. No official play area, family trail or activity-sheet offer was clearly confirmed, so plan Balmoral as a place for walking, looking and exploring rather than a high-interaction children's attraction.
The watch-out here is expectation mismatch. General admission is mainly about the estate outside, not room-after-room access inside the castle. That makes Balmoral a weaker fit for toddlers, children who get bored on slower heritage visits, or families travelling a long way purely for a castle day.
It is much easier to recommend if you are already spending time in Royal Deeside, Ballater or the Cairngorms and want a scenic, royal-themed stop with gardens, mazes and food on site.
