Plan Drumlanrig around the grounds unless your family particularly wants to see inside the castle. The adventure playground, gardens and walks can easily fill half a day. To see inside, book a separate 75-minute guided tour on one of the selected dates.

Parking and arrival
Gardens and castle tickets include parking. Estate walks cost £2.50 per car, and the castle and garden/playground car parks have different entrances. Follow the green estate signs rather than relying only on sat nav.
Visit length
Allow half a day for the playground and gardens. Stay longer if you add the 75-minute tour or a longer estate walk.
Adults can enjoy the castle setting while children have room to run and climb. The playground and walks mean the day does not depend on them being interested in the castle.
Strongest ages
Preschool and primary-age children get the most from the playground. Toddlers can enjoy the gardens, with family facilities nearby; older children need to be happy with longer walks or castle stories.
Not ideal for
It is a poor fit if you need a dependable indoor rainy-day visit, a smooth buggy route or to turn up and go inside the castle without booking a tour.
Most families can make the playground the main event. Children can race on the zip wires, use the twisting slides and climbing structures, then slow things down with the gardens or an estate walk.
If you add the castle, expect children to stay with a guided group for about 75 minutes. It suits children who are happy to stay with the group and move at the guide's pace; otherwise, stick to the more flexible playground-and-gardens visit.
For the most flexible visit, book the gardens and playground. Castle tours run on a separate selected-date timetable, while estate walks are open year-round and have their own parking arrangements.
Book the tour first if seeing inside the castle is the reason you are going, then fit the gardens or playground around your slot. If the children mainly want to run and climb, book the gardens-and-playground ticket without the tour.
Most of the day is outdoors. Larchwood Cabin and a booked castle tour offer some shelter, but Drumlanrig is still a poor wet-weather choice for a full day. Expect pea gravel, grass and steep sections in the gardens; woodland paths can be hard work with a buggy, wheelchair or mobility scooter.
The castle has a lift, but buggies cannot go through the rooms; leave them at reception. Accessible parking at Larchwood is first come, first served. By public transport, the bus leaves you at the estate entrance, around a 1.5-mile walk from the castle, so check the current journey before travelling.
Larchwood Cabin is close to the playground and serves light lunches, cakes and drinks during the public season. You can bring a picnic, though benches are limited.
There are toilets at Larchwood and the Stableyard, with baby changing. Dogs are allowed on leads in the gardens, but not in the playground or Larchwood Cabin.
For a shorter ruins visit near Dumfries, choose Caerlaverock Castle. If gardens are the main draw, Threave Garden and Estate is farther west in Dumfries and Galloway, not a handy add-on to Drumlanrig.
