Plan Drumlanrig around the grounds unless your family particularly wants to see inside the castle. The adventure playground, gardens and walks can easily fill half a day. To see inside, book a separate 75-minute guided tour on one of the selected dates.

Our family take
Adults can enjoy the castle setting while children have room to run and climb. The playground and walks mean the day does not depend on them being interested in the castle.
- Strongest ages. Preschool and primary-age children get the most from the playground. Toddlers can enjoy the gardens; older children need to be happy with longer walks or castle stories.
- Not ideal for. It is a poor fit if you need a dependable indoor rainy-day visit, a smooth buggy route or to turn up and go inside the castle without booking a tour.

- Gardens and playground: adults £8, children £6, under-5s free, including parking. Castle tours and events are booked and priced separately; check the ticket for your chosen date. Estate-walk parking is £2.50 per car per day.

- The next advertised public castle opening is 31 October 2026. The Halloween tour is listed at £20, or £35 with the evening trail. It must be pre-booked and includes spooky stories. Check event age rules and what your ticket includes; ordinary tour prices and free-under-5 terms do not automatically apply.

Make it work for your family
What families actually do
Most families can make the playground the main event. Children can race on the zip wires, use the twisting slides and climbing structures, then slow things down with the gardens or an estate walk.
If you add the castle, expect children to stay with a guided group for about 75 minutes. It suits children who are happy to stay with the group and move at the guide's pace; otherwise, stick to the more flexible playground-and-gardens visit.
Choose the version of the day
For the most flexible visit, book the gardens and playground. The castle has a separate timetable, while estate walks are open year-round and have their own parking arrangements.
Book the tour first if seeing inside the castle is the reason you are going, then fit the gardens or playground around your slot. If the children mainly want to run and climb, book the gardens-and-playground ticket without the tour.
A guided tour lasts about 75 minutes, with up to 12 people, and starts at reception near the castle car park. Castle tours must be booked online. Gardens-and-playground tickets can be bought on the day if there is availability, though booking ahead is recommended.

Most of the day is outdoors. Larchwood Cabin and a booked castle tour offer some shelter, but Drumlanrig is still a poor wet-weather choice for a full day. Some garden paths have hard surfaces; the gravel and grass woodland paths can be hard work with a buggy, wheelchair or mobility scooter. Ask staff which route will suit your family.
The castle has a lift, and accessible parking beside Larchwood is first come, first served. Before booking a tour with a small child, check whether you will need to carry them through the rooms and where you can leave a buggy.
By public transport, the bus leaves you at the estate entrance, around a 1.5-mile walk from the castle. Allow for that walk with children and check the current journey before travelling.
Food, toilets and family practicalities
Larchwood Cabin is close to the playground and serves light lunches, cakes and drinks during the public season. You can bring a picnic, though benches are limited.
Larchwood toilets are open during public opening, and the Stableyard toilets open year-round. Check baby-changing provision before travelling if you need it.
Dogs on leads are welcome in the gardens and Larchwood Cabin Café. Pet dogs cannot go into the adventure playground or the indoor Castle Tearoom, so plan how your family will split up if you are bringing a dog. The tearoom has outdoor seating reached through the gardens. Ask the venue about assistance-dog arrangements.
When to choose something else
For a shorter ruins visit near Dumfries, choose Caerlaverock Castle. If gardens are the main draw, Threave Garden and Estate is farther west in Dumfries and Galloway, not a handy add-on to Drumlanrig.
