Scottish Football Museum and Hampden Park

The Hampden tour takes football-loving children into the dressing rooms and players’ tunnel, with a chance to test their shot speed along the way. Pair it with the Scottish Football Museum for trophies, old match footage and stories from across Scottish football. Most of the visit is indoors, with a short spell pitchside.

Best for
Football fans of primary age and above
Cost
Paid museum; combined tour ticket available
Weather
Mainly indoors, with pitchside exposure
Time to allow
Around 1½–2 hours for both parts

Our family take

With a keen football fan, we would book the combined visit and leave time to browse the museum after the tour. Primary-age children and older fans are the strongest fit. With a younger child who needs constant movement, a guided tour may feel long.

  • Choose a tour date. Fixtures and stadium events can stop tours, including days before some matches. Check the calendar before making the journey.
  • Access and sound. The museum and tour have wheelchair access. The tunnel includes the recorded Hampden Roar; ask about this and buggy arrangements if they will affect your child’s visit.

Tour dates and timing
The guided tour takes 45–60 minutes; allow at least the same for the museum. Book a listed tour time rather than relying on a daily timetable. Scotland matchdays and the two preceding days have no stadium tours; cup fixtures and other events can also restrict them.
Getting there
Enter at Hampden’s South Stand. Free parking is available outside it, with accessible spaces; matchday access is controlled by security. Mount Florida station is about a 10-minute walk, and King’s Park about 15 minutes, with trains from Glasgow Central. Allow longer with young children.

A little more detail

Make it work for your family

What can children try?

On the stadium tour, children can strike a ball in the indoor warm-up area and see how fast their shot is. The route visits the dressing rooms and goes through the players’ tunnel into the stadium bowl. Bring a coat for pitchside, even when the rest of your rainy-day plan is indoors.

See the stadium tour route

The museum has the original Scottish Cup, old Hampden turnstiles, a historic dressing-room display and match footage, plus the Scottish Football Hall of Fame. A child who likes players and football stories has more to follow here than one who mainly wants to kick a ball. You can be selective about the displays once the guided part is over.

Access, noise and a café break

Wheelchair users can visit both the museum and stadium tour. Museum entry is by ramp, with level access available by arrangement. Read the separate museum and stadium access guides if you need details for a particular chair or route. Contact the team about taking a buggy on the tour, and about toilets or baby changing if these will decide your visit.

The tunnel plays the Hampden Roar. For a child who finds sudden or loud sound difficult, ask the team how this part is managed. The museum’s visual tour and storyboard can help you prepare them for what they will see and hear.

Café Hampden serves hot and cold refreshments and light snacks. Budget separately for food and give yourself room for a break around the fixed tour time.

Choosing the rest of your Glasgow day

Hampden is on Glasgow’s south side, so leave room for the journey if you are combining it with another city stop. Keep the second visit flexible after the tour and museum, especially with younger siblings.

If football is only a passing interest, Riverside Museum is a free indoor alternative with vehicles and recreated streets. The Burrell Collection offers another free museum choice on the south side, with Pollok Country Park for outdoor time when the weather improves. Both require a separate journey from Hampden.

Compare the Glasgow family guide for a wider day plan, or the rainy-day guide if you need to keep most of the outing under cover.
