Why visit

Go for Cairnie if you want an outdoor, play-heavy family day in Fife rather than a museum, castle or indoor attraction. The main reason to visit changes by season: Funyard play earlier in the year, Mega Maze and fruit picking in summer, and pumpkins in October. It is strongest for active children who like space, climbing, maze-solving and seasonal activities. If you are visiting with toddlers, build the day around the Funyard and food breaks rather than the full maze.

Best for

Families who want an outdoor seasonal day out in Fife, especially active children who enjoy play areas, maze-solving, fruit picking or pumpkins depending on the month.

Watch out

The visit changes by season. The Mega Maze starts mid-July, fruit depends on crop conditions, pumpkins need separate October booking, and most of the main activities are outdoors.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome on leads in some areas, but not in the Funyard/Mega Maze, fruit or pumpkin picking areas, or inside the café. If your day depends on those child-activity zones, do not bring a dog unless another adult can stay outside with it. Assistance dogs are allowed throughout.

Is Cairnie Fruit Farm worth visiting with kids?

Cairnie is worth considering if you want an outdoor seasonal family day in Fife. It is not mainly a farm-animal attraction; the draw is the Funyard, Mega Maze, fruit picking, café, farm shop and October pumpkins.

For most families, the best visit depends on timing. Earlier in the season, treat it as a Funyard and café visit. From mid-July, the Mega Maze adds a bigger challenge. In October, pumpkins become the main reason to go, but they are a separate booking.

Funyard, Mega Maze, fruit picking or pumpkins

Start with the Funyard if you want the most reliable all-round family visit. It is the main play area and the best fit for younger children.

Add the Mega Maze from mid-July if your children are old enough to enjoy a longer outdoor challenge. It is included with Funyard tickets when open.

Use fruit picking as a seasonal extra, not a guaranteed main event. You do not need to pre-book PYO fruit or sunflowers, but crops change, so check what is ready before travelling.

Choose pumpkins for an October visit. Pumpkin picking is separate from Funyard tickets and needs online booking.

Best time of year to visit

In March and the early season, Cairnie is mainly a Funyard visit, so go for outdoor play rather than maze or fruit expectations. May and June can add early PYO such as strawberries if crops are ready, but families should check current updates before travelling.

July and August are the strongest all-round months because Funyard, Mega Maze and PYO can all be part of the decision. September is more of a shoulder-season play and maze visit, with fruit less predictable. October is pumpkin season, with Funyard and Mega Maze if open, but pumpkin booking is separate. In winter, do not plan a normal family visit unless Cairnie has announced a specific seasonal event.

Tickets and booking

For a normal Funyard visit, book online to be safe and check the current price before you go. The Mega Maze is included with Funyard tickets when it is open, but it does not start until mid-July.

Fruit and sunflower picking works differently: Cairnie says fruit and sunflower picking does not need pre-booking, and you pay for what you pick. Pumpkin visits are separate. They need online booking for October slots and are not included with Funyard tickets.

Check the official booking page before travelling, especially for prices and seasonal events.

Best ages

Toddlers and preschoolers are best suited to the Funyard, sand/play areas, café breaks and a flexible pace. The Mega Maze may be too much for some younger children, especially in poor weather or if they tire easily.

Primary-age children are likely to get the most from Cairnie, especially when the Funyard and Mega Maze overlap. Older children may enjoy the maze, pumpkins and outdoor challenge. Mixed-age groups can work well, but you may need to split time between play, picking, food breaks and the maze.

Food, toilets, parking and practical notes

Cairnie has a café and farm shop, with picnic areas listed for families bringing food. Free parking and accessible parking bays are listed on the Find Us page.

Toilets and a Changing Places toilet are confirmed. Baby changing is not clearly confirmed, so check directly if that matters for your visit.

Cupar Train Station is about 2 miles away. Seasonal local buses are listed, but check the current service before relying on public transport.

Prams, accessibility and terrain

Cairnie has level access to some key visitor areas, but it is not a smooth, fully pram-friendly site. The Funyard is likely to be more manageable than the maze or picking areas, but you should still expect grass, slopes and uneven ground.

The Mega Maze and fruit-picking areas are more limited for access and involve rough or undulating ground. After wet weather, an all-terrain buggy is a safer choice than a small city pram.

Dogs at Cairnie

Dogs are welcome on leads in some areas, but not in the Funyard/Mega Maze, fruit or pumpkin picking areas, or inside the café. If your day depends on those child-activity zones, do not bring a dog unless another adult can stay outside with it.

Assistance dogs are allowed throughout. This is worth checking before travel because it can decide whether Cairnie is practical for the whole family.

Weather and what to wear

Cairnie has a café and shop, but most of the family value is outside. Wet weather can mean grass, mud and uneven ground, especially around the maze, picking areas and pumpkins.

Bring wellies or sturdy boots for pumpkins, PYO or wet-weather visits. This is not the best Fife attraction to choose as a main rainy-day fallback.

Nearby family days out in Fife

If Cairnie is not the right fit for the season or forecast, compare it with Craigtoun Country Park for play near St Andrews, St Andrews Aquarium for a shorter indoor stop, Pittencrieff Park for a free outdoor Dunfermline day, or Deep Sea World for a bigger indoor aquarium option near North Queensferry.
